Please answer the following questions...
1) Reading Bonus Question (Be the first to post the correct answer): Why was the church that Calpurnia took Jem and Scout to called "First Purchase?"
2) In Chapter 12, Jem and Scout are accepted by Calpurnia's church congregation. Describe a time when you were invited to join a "new" social group. Give me three to five descriptive sentences on the experience and how you felt about it. Do you think it's important for people to be able to feel like they belong to social groups? Why?

1. The church is called First Purchase because it was paid for with the first earnings of the freed slaves.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, they're accepted by Calpurnia's church congregation in chapter 12, not 11. :)
bonus---- because it is an all black church and the onlyblack church in town. it was also the first church i town
ReplyDelete1.The church is called First purchase because it was payed for by money earned by the freed slaves. It is also because it was the first purchased church in the town
ReplyDelete2. Well, i never really was invited to join a social group, but i was welcomed at brown chapel in selma. when we went to brown chapel, we were welcomed and were invited by them. i think that it is inportant for people to join social groups because people need freinds in life
i cant think of any social group @ the moment. MAyby, for the lack of a better example, my time in eagles mere pensilvania could be used to represent this iea. I had been going to eagles mere all my life, however i had never attempted to make contact with many freinds their untuil verry recently. Recently I have met some of my few freinds their's freinds and they have excepted me. Whether going to some odd pennsilvanian fair/festivle traditions with them or just wandering around the beautiful counrtyside i ahve began to feal excpeted by most of the kids in the area and have begun to feal a part of their social ring.
ReplyDelete1. Even though Alec, Trev and Lizzi already answered this one, the church is named First Purchase because when the slaves were freed the first thing they did with all of their money was to donate towards the making of a church for blacks and other slaves.
ReplyDelete2. It seemed like we were accepted into the Brown chapel with kindness. One group, or team that i joined this year was the lacrosse team, I was accepted into the team but you have to cause your playing on it but ive also made some new friends, or became better friends with people on the team.
for the first question, Calpurnia takes the children to her church which is called the first purchase because it was bought by the first earnings of slaves that had been freed. I've never really been apart of a big social group like a church so i have no experience except for the Brown Chapel in Selma, Alabama. when we walked in i felt very out of place especially because no one was there and we were a big group of white kids in black church. but as time went on we started to meet the church and be apart of it. everyone was very nice and loving. i wish we had more places like that in telluride.
ReplyDelete2. I've never really been invited into a 'social group', and I'm not part of a church or anything, so the closest thing is being welcomed to Brown Chapel in Selma. The members of the all-black church were very kind to us, a group of white kids, even though we all seemed a bit out of place. Once we started to meet the members of the church they didn't seem to mind at all. It's somewhat important to be in social groups because then you feel like you belong someplace, but i don't think it really matters if your not in a social group.
ReplyDeleteI am ussually invited to a social group when i join new sports such as the big mountain program and lacrosse. IN these groups i am welcomed by others and we all try to do the same thing, and i geuss i would consider that a social group. I think it matters to be in a social group because it helps you make new friends and be with another groupp of people that you are used to . eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk its a ***** (south park)
ReplyDeleteI've never been invited to a social group involving church, but I've been invited to new social groups, when I've made new friends, (good & bad) and when I've joined new teams. Most these groups are welcoming, and I've tried to do the same when I've invited new people into my social groups.
ReplyDeleteAlthough lots of people have already answered this, the church is called First Purchase, because the slaves bought it with their first earnings.
On the trip, we were all invited warmly to the Brown Chapel. They had no clue who we were, yet provided us with hospitality, like taking us out to lunch and being so kind. I don't think they have ever had a group quite like us, so it was pretty cool. I think it matters to be in a social group because then you have friends and around people which is good for people and makes them feel more confident in themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis is actually mine:

ReplyDeleteIn the past I have been warmly invited to churches such as Brown Chapel. While we down in the south we were not only welcomed to Brown Chapel but also to places such as the school that we visited. Even though we didn't know them at all they still treated us as if we had grown up with them for our whole life. All people need to be treated and welcomed like that and I am sure that everyone has been in their life at least once.
ReplyDeleteI have been invited to a couple social group mostly involving sports but my main one (as everyone knows) is my camp; Agawam. It felt awkward when I first got there because lots of people knew friends from the previous year but then we started playing frisbee and having a good time. I think its important to be involved in social groups because it gives you something you routinely do, but has variation within it. You are always meeting new people but also doing the same thing.
