Hey Gang,
Turns out I will be joining you for this week after all, but till then, I need you to answer some more questions on your reading for me...see you Tuesday morning! (P.S. This blog is a long one - you may want to write it on Word first, then cut and paste.)
Please follow all of the directions and answer the following questions...
1) Reading Response: What action is it that finally disperses the mob that confronts Atticus, in chapter 15?
2a) Atticus and Aunt Alexandra represent very different parenting styles. Can you describe their major differences, in terms of what you think they want to teach the children?
2b) Have you observed your own parents to have different parenting styles? Tell a story or give an example that illustrates your opinion.
To answer the next questions, you must first click on the blog link "Library of Congress:Photographs of Signs Enforcing Racial Discrimination"
3) Look through the pictures of the old signs enforcing the "separate but equal" racism of the day. What is the most shocking or compelling picture to you and why?
4) Brown vs. The Board of Education ruling overturned the "separate but equal" law over 50 years ago. Do you think minorities and Caucasians are still "separate and unequal" in any ways? Categorize your answer as a political, social, or economic equality/inequality.
Your responses are due for Tuesday's class. Thanks. - C -

THE FINAL ACTION THAT DISPERS THE MOB IS WHERN SCOUT AND JEM REFUSE TO LEAVE AND TALK TO ONE OF THE MEN.
ReplyDeleteI think that the biggest difference is when atticus is fine with the way scout dresses and she is not they argue and discuss it a lot.
ReplyDelete1. The mob finally disperses when Scout recognizes Mr. Cunningham in the group of men. She says to tell him to tell his son "hey" for her. Suddenly ashamed, Mr. Cunningham tells all of the men to clear out.
ReplyDelete3. The colored dining room area was most shocking to me because it looks run down and shows very clearly the Plessy v. Ferguson was not doing its job. Nothing was "separate but equal."
4. Yes many schools are still separate and unequal through funding per student. In Chicago, a highschool has a 90% White students and 10% Black and Hispanic. It gets about $12,000 for each student. Another highschool that has 5% white and 95% black and hispanic gets about $9,000 for each student. So not most schools that have a bigger "minority" population does not get equality as the white population.
2a. Atticus and Aunt Alexandra's majorest difference is the way they parent. Atticus is more chill and laid back. Aunt Alexandra is more formal and strict. She thinks that Jem and Scout need to grow up as gentlmen and lady like instead of playing around all the time and living as children.
ReplyDelete3. The picture that I chose is the one with two doors leading to the same place but one door is for whites and the other is for blacks. 16) South Carolina. June 1939.
ReplyDeleteThis picture is the most shocking to me be because it leads to one building, but you have to go through different doors just because of the color of your skin. Even the prices of the windows were different for whites and blacks.
1) Scout saying to Mr. Cunningham to tell his son-"Hey". Then Mr. Cunningham asks his men to disperse.
ReplyDelete3) The most compelling picture for me is #22. It doesn't just segregate the blacks and whites but also differs in the pricing. To me it makes it seem like more segregation.
4) There is definitely still segregation within communities. There are cases in schools, work and just in life. The minorities are generally under funded because the majorities receive more funding because the larger group is being funded. It isn't always black and white but with all civil rights issues, religion, beliefs and race
ReplyDelete1. THe most amazing sign for me was the "Positively no beer sold to Indians sign, it also confused me that indians could not buy beer because of their heritage.
ReplyDelete2. The mob that confronted Atticus dispersed when Scout asked Mr. Cunningham to say "Hey" to his son for her
3. Atticus Is a little more relaxed with his parenting style and lets Scout and Jem just live their lives, while Aunt Alexandra is more formal and wants them to be all formal instead of having fun
i think my parents dont really have different parenting styles and they are aslo very nice people. they believe in me and help me out when i get to thoose tight spots in life but i think their personalities are alittle ifferent because they dont like each others stuff going into "their car" but it always happens anyway. I belive my parents love me alot and have worked so hard to get me where i am today. i have a good time with them because they are so active and are able to do and go almost anywhere.
ReplyDeletei think the most shocking one is the one bathroom that says it has a "Diner" for blacks in the back but its just a bathroom
ReplyDelete1. the mob disperses when scout recognizes Mr. Cunningham and asks him to say hi to his son for her. he becomes ashamed and tells the mob to clear out.
ReplyDelete4. the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling 50 years ago had decided that segregation was no longer in school systems. but even today there are still kinds of segregation, between students, teachers, race and gender. but these segregated groups are not always because of racial differences but maybe because of popularity or physical and mental disabilities. so no matter what court ruling, minorities, depending who, have unequal treatment in school and out.
1)The action that finally disperses the mob is Scout going up to Mr. Cunningham and asking him to tell his son 'hey' for her.
ReplyDelete2a) Atticus's parenting style is more relaxed and laid back, and is fine with the way scout dresses. Aunt Alexandra is more formal and strict, and wants Scout to wear nice dresses. Aunt alexandra wants scout and jem to grow up to be proper and atticus lets them a=have fun more.
2b) My parent's parenting styles are pretty similar, but my dad yells at me more when he gets annoyed and my mom doesn't as much.
3) The picture that was most shocking to me was #18, of the restaurant whith 2 different doors. The pricing is different on the 2 doors as well. It's shocking because both the doors lead to the same restaurant but are for different races.
4) There is still segregation in schools and communities between minorities and caucasians today. Minorities are generally get less funding for schools and places, and probably no court ruling will stop some form of segregation not just of races but beliefs, disabilities, etc.
2b. My parents' parenting are both simular to Atticus' and Aunt Alexandra, my mom is more strict with getting things done around the house but it is good because she is preparing me for the the future. My step dad is simular but more laid back, he lets me get away with more things and he gives me more freedom.
ReplyDelete3. The worst but least suprising pictures were the two different theaters, the whites' was all nice and fancy while the colored was all runned down. It didn't suprise me as much because we have already learned and seen pictures of the differences of white and colored public places.
4. In many ways they are separate and they are unequal. The difference from 1950 is that the separation is due to economic diffences not forced by law. In many ways they are unequal but not unequal because of the law. Schools have unequal funding because of the ways cities raise taxes to pay for school. The poor neighborhoods raise less taxes than the wealthy neighbors hence the neighborhood schools will always be unequal when they are funded this way. If all the tax money was equally distributed to every public school, the standards of learning will go down. Thats the way our system of education is in America. It's the choice of neighborhood, culture, and area of living. If you choose to live in an all black or hispanic or even poor white neighborhood where they barely pay any taxes, you child is most likely going to go to a public school that has a lower standard of teaching. These days schooling is not unequal cause of race, it's unequal because of wealth. This is for public schools, pirvate schools are a whole different story.
1. THE FINAL ACTION THAT DISPERS THE MOB IS WHERN SCOUT AND JEM REFUSE TO LEAVE AND TALK TO ONE OF THE MEN.
ReplyDelete2a. I think that the biggest difference is when atticus is fine with the way scout dresses and she is not they argue and discuss it a lot.
and they always want scout to act and present different.
2b. i think my parents dont really have different parenting styles and they are aslo very nice people. they believe in me and help me out when i get to thoose tight spots in life but i think their personalities are alittle ifferent because they dont like each others stuff going into "their car" but it always happens anyway. I belive my parents love me alot and have worked so hard to get me where i am today. i have a good time with them because they are so active and are able to do and go almost anywhere.
3. i think the most shocking one is the one bathroom that says it has a "Diner" for blacks in the back but its just a bathroom. this i think is from some racis person trying to make fun of the blacks and it shows how mean p[eople can actually be.
4. i think some people are actually unequal but i also think over all the amount of the white/black.ect are pretty much around equal but there are lower and higher classes.
2 a) Aunt Alexandra believes in the parenting of the rules and customs of the adult world and being formal. Atticus on the other hand is a great father and thinks that aunt Alexandra cares too much rather than too little. She is too involved and does not let children be children. Atticus believes in responsible parenting, but wants to let children be children. b) For example, if you are two involved with telling your children what to do then they cannot learn their own responsibility and they will not know the true values of parenting.
ReplyDelete3. the most compelling picture to me is the picture with the Gem Theatre exclusively for Colored people because I think that it is crazy how many buildings, restaurants, companies, and theatres ex. That are exclusively for white people, but they don’t say that they just say that blacks can’t come in. I found this compelling because if there is a building that is the same for blacks it is exclusive and special. This just showed how whites tried not to let blacks have something of theirs or even their own.
4. I think that they are still separate but equal, but I also think that the communities are slowly merging. I know many people that have black friends and they are the best friends they will ever have and there is no thing that will make them think of each other differently because of their race except for their friends.
3. I think that the picture of the little girl drinking out of the fountain is the most moving shot. This young girl, probably 11 or 12, just thinks that this is normal. She thinks that segregation and discrimination are normal. Because she is young, and since this is what she is used to, this girl still doesn't know the of the injustice upon her. Although she is African American, and therefore discriminated against, she has yet to learn why this is wrong.
ReplyDelete3. All most all of these pictures are shocking. The one that stands out to me the most is number twenty-six, the picture of the restaurant window saying no beer served to Indians. This stands out to me because I guess I don’t really think about the Native Americans civil rights as much as the blacks.
ReplyDelete4. In some ways yes. Many employers will not hire African Americans because of racism and prejudiced. Most African Americans will not get better education because of poverty and teachers not under standing how to teach them.
